Consider the following scenario:

Homeowner goes to the hardware store to purchase a new kitchen faucet. Ok, back home now. Clean up the mess, scrub the grunge off the sink and put the new faucet in. The directions are in the box…this should be easy enough.

Crap! It doesn’t seem to fit! The holes match up, but the supply lines are a little short. Why don’t they just make them all the same?

Back to the store…”This time, I will swallow my pride and talk to someone who knows more than I do,” he says.

This type of thing continues throughout the day. The homeowner has borrowed several tools from his neighbor, who really likes to talk, so a lot of time was wasted making small talk to avoid being rude. More time and gas were wasted making several trips to the hardware store. A lot of cussing could be heard as he smashed his thumb or injured himself when the wrench slipped.

He doesn’t even have the energy to breathe a sigh of relief as he completes the job at 5:25, just in time for his wife to get home and start dinner. With bleeding knuckles and a sore back, he takes a shower and makes himself presentable for dinner with his wife.

“Thanks for replacing the faucet,” his wife says. “I hope it wasn’t too difficult.”

“Nah, no sweat!” he replies.

Less than one year later, the faucet looks like it has seen better days. The finish is pealing off it, and the washers are bad. “Hey, dear, I think it’s time to replace the kitchen faucet again,” his wife says.

“Sure dear, I’ll call a plumber today!”
